The European Union (EU) is a union of twenty-seven independent states. Founded over half a century ago to enhance political, economic and social co-operation, today the EU is more than a reality as it has become a key player both locally within Europe as well as globally. This fact is exemplified by the establishment of a European-wide Single Market, the launch of the Euro as the single European currency, and the strengthened EU voice in global issues over recent years. Another prominent example of how the EU plays a significant role in society, both within and outside the Community, is through its funding programmes.

This section provides general information about the European Union as well as descriptions of the different types of EU funding which are presently available.
